Cilacap, C Java (ANTARA News) - State-owned oil and gas company Pertamina, through its Refinery Unit IV Cilacap, Central Java, is investigation an oil spill case in the Cilacap - Nuskambangan waters, Central Java, a Pertamina official said.
"We are currently investigating the oil spill case. But Pertamina as a company which cares for the environment, does not need to wait for the results of the investigation. No matter who makes mistake in this case, Pertamina will take pro-active steps to overcome the oil spill," Public Relations Section Head of Pertamina RU IV, Kurdi Susanto said here on Sunday.
He said that the volume of oil that got spilled was not too large and it only concentrated around the Wijayapura Pier (a ferry port serving passengers to Nuskamabangan island) so that it could be handled soon.
Kurdi said that the oil might have spilled over when the oil tanker "MT Asia 17" was filled in with 20 thousand kiloliters of marine fuel oil (MFO) at the Area-70 Pier at 9 pm on Saturday night.
"During the pumping of the MFO there was a small amount of oil spill but though it was small when it is in the water it would contaminate a relatively wide area," he said.
Yet, as a company which cares for the environment Pertamina immediately deployed a team to handle the oil spill. He said his side was able to recollect the spilled oil.
"Together with Cilacap`s Environmental office, we are still investigating the cause of the oil spill," he said.
On a separate occasion, chairman of the All Indonesian Fishermen Association(HNSI) for Cilacap, Indon Tjahjono said his organization was also conducting an investigation into the oil spill to see its impact on fishermen.
"We could not yet explain it further because we are still investigating it," he said.
